Shortly after earning my real estate licence in May of 1998, I was forwarded a call from our office receptionist from a newly arrived US embassy employee. She asked if I could assist her with finding a home to rent for her new 3 year posting in Ottawa. Being my very first client, I gladly accepted the challenge. That American diplomat passed on my name to her colleague, who in turn, referred me to another, and so on. Since then, I have been privileged to assist well over 400 American Embassy families from all over the world to relocate to my hometown!
For many, it was their first time in Canada. It made me appreciate that moving is not just about finding the right home. It also means adjusting to a whole new city, country and culture. I am happy to act as an unofficial Ottawa ambassador touring my clients to potential homes and sharing some of the city's history, "Canadian-isms" and local insight. In addition, my experience helps me to steer new arrivals through the maze of embassy requirements for safety, security, housing size and legal requirements.
